A second-generation independent pharmacist, Matthew went into the profession because he saw firsthand how rewarding the interactions can be between pharmacist and patient. But he has gone beyond the simple one-on-one to develop sophisticated programs—each housed within an actual pharmacy—to help a multitude of patients, many of whom are strangers. The two programs he launched within as many months include a genetic testing program that personalizes cardiovascular, diabetic and psychotropic medication regimens for Medicare Part B patients who have trouble metabolizing certain drugs; and a point-of-care testing program for COVID-19, influenza A/B, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), group A strep (GAS), hemoglobin A1c, lipid panels, viral conjunctivitis, and urinary drug screening. This latter program also offers continuous blood glucose (CGM) services, which include the application of a leading-edge sensor placed on the skin to track patient data that can be used later for personalized recommendations. Despite encountering several difficulties—limited supply lines during the pandemic, when many test kits and PPE were diverted to larger cities and institutions; the usual initial hesitancy from local providers to utilize the programs’ services; and some lingering billing confusion among third-party payers—Matthew has continued to operate and demonstrate a consistent quality product. “My family was key; as new projects and programs take up more and more time, they were there to support me and the business.”
