Nicole chose pharmacy because of the limitless possibilities to help others improve their health, and because she feels there are so many traditional and nontraditional paths and opportunities to innovate in all of them.

She helped to launch the first digital/hybrid diabetes prevention program through a telehealth model across the United States. She helped design, develop, and scale this diabetes prevention program to reach the underserved. She also worked to have employers, payers, and lawmakers to recognize the value of pharmacists and technicians working in this type of program to help the one in three Americans who currently live with prediabetes but are not aware of their condition. She collaborated with colleges of pharmacy, associations, the Mexican Consulate, and the National Center for Farmworker Health to deliver the benefits of this work. Additionally, she published and presented the findings of her efforts to the Centers for Disease Control, the HRSA Learning Collaboratives, and to PQA to describe the program and her findings.

The key resource in innovation throughout Nicole’s career has been having leaders that believed in her. From a more practical standpoint, having marketing, training, operational, and staffing resources has been critical to create scalability in innovative programs such as the Diabetes Prevention Program.

One of the biggest obstacles in driving the success of the Diabetes Prevention Program is awareness about prediabetes in the general population. One in three people have prediabetes, but most don’t know it and those that do may not feel motivated to do something about it. Fortunately, through education and partnership with community organizations, Nicole believes we can raise awareness about this public health issue; if left unaddressed, it could be a major health catastrophe for our communities and our health system.
