Jason knew he could do so much more to improve people’s lives when he approached his long-time friend Dr. Mike Pulido D.D.S. about a collaborative pharmacy practice at his busy Germantown, Tenn. dental office. The office serves 40 to 70 patients per day and averages 600 to 800 per month. The collaboration has proven successful as Jason provides COVID screenings, temperature monitoring, blood pressure monitoring and medication history reviews. He consults on oral issues such as xerostomia (dry mouth), osteonecrosis of the jaw and medications that may cause excessive bleeding. He also screens and alerts the dental practitioners for conditions such as hypoglycemia risk, orthostatic hypotension, autonomic dysfunction or other disorders such as genetic heart defects that could predispose a patient to cardiomyopathy when nitrous oxide or other anesthesia is used. Some of the patients may not regularly see primary care doctors, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, but they may visit the dentist two or more times a year. This has allowed Jason to offer valuable consultations and alert patients to signs of potential problems. “My father is a pharmacist and I learned early-on the importance of helping patients with their medication concerns and issues,” says Jason.
