Carlos Torrado-Delgado, founder and creator of the mobile application RPh NOW, grew up in Hatillo, Puerto Rico, not far from his family’s independently owned pharmacy, where his mother worked as a pharmacist. He explained that his mother’s “passion for patient care helped guide my decision to go into pharmacy” – and, later, to innovate on behalf of the profession. Carlos’ drive to enhance patient care and improve patient access motivated him to create RPh NOW, a mobile application designed to match pharmacies with relief pharmacists on an as-needed basis. Through this application, pharmacies in need of coverage for specific work shifts can instantaneously connect with nearby pharmacists looking for extra hours or part-time work. Carlos developed the app with help from his professional community, noting that “friends and colleagues, from pharmacists to pharmacy owners, were a key component during the brainstorming phase [and played] a crucial part in beta testing the new application.” Although it was challenging to find a programming team that could handle the specific needs of the project, Carlos persisted and rolled out the RPh NOW app in 2022.
